Our Picks For Cannes

May 13th, 2009

Festival de Cannes is underway. For those of you lucky enough to make the trip to the south of France this year, B-Side has created another unofficial Festival Genius site to help you optimize your schedule.

As usual, there is a lot of buzz surrounding Cannes. Here are a few films that we’re especially excited about:

Broken EmbracesLos Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces) – Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar (Volver, Talk to Her, All About My Mother) once again collaborates with Penélope Cruz for his neo-noir Los Abrazos Rotos. After Mateo Blanco (Lluis Homar) is in a severe car accident, he loses not only his eyesight, but the love of his life (Penélope Cruz). Fourteen years later, Blanco must now try to reunite with his lost love and put his life back together.

Bright StarBright StarJane Campion (The Piano) tells the true story of the love affair between Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish) and 19th century English romantic poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw). Their two-year relationship is wrought with financial woes and disapproval from friends and family. Keats eventually contracts tuberculosis and dies at the age of 25.

Drag Me to HellDrag Me to HellSam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead Trilogy) returns to horror after 15 years with this campy tale of supernatural revenge. When Christine, a timid loan officer (Alison Lohman) makes the tough decision to deny elderly Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) an extension on her home loan, the old woman exacts a curse upon her. Unless Christine can undo the hex, in three days, she is going to hell.
